Bernie de Haldevang has set up five credit and political risk underwriting teams from start up or as a restart and has a record as a profitable underwriter.
He is a member of the Group Underwriting Committee and head of credit insurance, political risk insurance and crisis management insurance lines at Canopius Managing Agents Limited, operating at Lloyd’s of London through its syndicate 4444. He has over thirty-seven years of experience in the insurance industry, his original core practice including credit & political risk, war, terrorism, political violence and kidnap for ransom insurance lines.
He is the owner of de Haldevang & Company. This company provides expert opinions and professional witness work in litigation and arbitration cases typically working for law firms representing Underwriting companies.
Following two years of Articles at De Pinna, a west end law firm, he began his insurance career in 1983 as a political risk broker at Hogg Robinson Group plc (now part of Aon). His career has included board, senior management and group executive committee positions, in London and East Africa, working at Berry Palmer & Lyle Limited, Wellington Underwriting plc, Atrium Underwriters Ltd and at the African Trade Insurance Agency (ATI), the African continent’s Nairobi based multilateral Import & Export Credit Agency (ECA), which he founded for the World Bank as Chief Executive & head of diplomatic mission. Most recently, he spent over eight years at Aspen Insurance Group where he was head of financial & professional liability, credit & political risk, cyber, accident & health, piracy and kidnap for ransom insurance lines.
An avowed libertarian, he is a Councillor on Limpsfield Parish Council, a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful & Ancient Company of Scriveners, and a Global Fellow of the Project for the Study of the 21st Century (PS21), a non-traditional think tank formed in 2015. He has two adult and three younger children and lives in the south east of England.”
